Five step to learn how to play flag football defense

Step 1

Settle your best players at the linebacker spot. Unlike touch football, offenses will attempt to put together a decent running match in flag soccer. But the bulk of the running plays will run to the outside. Linebackers with speed can follow the running backs to the sidelines or drag the flags to stop big plays.

Step 2

Have your hands up when rushing the quarterback. In tackle soccer, pass rushers need to sack the quarterback. When rushing the quarterback in flag soccer, reaching down with your hands to drag a flag may provide the quarterback an open throwing lane. Put your hands up once you get past your blocker so you can hide the quarterback’s sight. If the quarterback is right-handed, put your left side up in the face of his passing arm, then try to pull the flag with your right hand.

Step 3

Keep the receiver in the face of you when you are in pass coverage. Attempting to catch a receiver from behind so you can pull the flag is very hard. But if you can put the receiver in the head of you, you can protect him up with your shoulder and arm, then grab the flag and drag it.

Step 4

Learn the quarterback’s eyes if you are in coverage. In flag soccer, most quarterbacks will look down their receivers before throwing it. A talented defensive athlete will be able to take benefit of that by jumping the pass route and blocking the pass whenever possible.

Step 5

Drag the flag on the opposing ball carrier but do not bring the man down. If you accidentally trip somebody while diving to drag out the flag, the referee will probably let that go with a signal on the original offense. If the referee notices your play as too aggressive, you will get an unnecessary roughness penalty called that will be unless 5 or 10 yards. If the referee believes you are reckless or trying to generate physical punishment by tackling, you will be ejected from the match and written up by the official. Athletes who written up are not permitted to play the next game.
